There really should be an Over 21's policy for HNA's discussion boards

Fred Sharpe's Nose
cmonurz Nothing to do with the fans. If the players turn up we have a chance, if not, we don't.

Beg to differ. A positive crowd can lift a team. Or is our team's famed morale so fragile?

Disagree Fred and agree with cmonurz-as said on another topic,I have never been convinced that fans make much difference.
They make other fans feel better but IMHO (regardless of what players say because they only say it to make the fans feel wanted) it doesn't affect what they do on the pitch.

then how do you explain the huge discrepancy towards the home team in terms of results?
it cant just be becuase they know where the goal is at home

Can you explain to me why Wimbledon ever did so well with NO support?

always struck me as a bit of a tasty place to go, as an away fan, before they sold their soul
quite vociferous i always thought,
perhaps its quality of fan, not quantity
plus there were always SOME fans there

I have to say Brendy I wonder why football, rugby and cricket teams do so much worse generally away from home than at home.
In football and rugby the pitches nowadays don't vary too much and travelling is not that gruelling-also there is a case for team bonding because of the time that players spend together on away trips.
There is possibly a feelgood factor about playing at home, same dressing-room,short journey to work (more time with the family) and of course all referees are homers

Cricket is a bit different because of weather conditions and how pitches are affected but although some of our strips are bouncier than in years ago they are never as quick as Australian wickets for example.
Also in cricket the crowd IMHO has even less of an impact than for other sports, similarly some Yank shouting "in the hole" surely doesn't help a golfer to perform better?

It is a favourite topic of mine and I am yet to be convinced that crowd support makes any difference to a sportsman but to placate the fans he or she will say that the crowd shouting for them made all the difference-they can't really say that they made f*** all difference can they?

My kids' football teams always do far better at home than away and they tend to get same level of parental support at both. This would suggest it's something other than the support that makes the difference.

Although possibly not the same thing as affects pro footballers !

I think crowds quite definitely can influence players, but only in extremes.

If a crowd gets on the back of a player or team it can knock their confidence, make them less willing to put themselves in the spotlight and less willing to put that extra 5% in.

A hugely partisan crowd can lift a team - it happens across lots of sports. Cricket crowds gee up fast bowlers on their run up, spectators at marathons give flagging runners extra energy and I've been at too many football matches where the crowd and team seem to have fed off each other in terms of upping energy levels to believe there is no link.

Most of the time I suspect the influence is minimal, but to say the crowd has NO effect seems to me to fly in the face of the extremely obvious.

Reading 3 - Wigan 2...

Lita x 2, Fae

2nd goal for Wigan scored with 10 mins to go makes for scary period with Hunt saving effort off line

God, that was almost getting interesting! Thanks thefruits for bringing us back down to earth. 2-1 to Reading, scrappy game, in post-match interview Coppell says it was nothing to do with the Reading fans screaming themselves hoarse, and how did he get a voice like that?

Impossible to predict as if Coppell changes the team appropriately we'll win, but if he leaves our central midfield the same, we'll get murdered.

Fred Sharpe's Nose If the level of pessimism evident on this board...

Personally I am glad to see a bit of realism. Mostly pretty low-scoring predictions and a modicum of away wins forecast. Compare this with the rabid 3 and 4-nils everybody was predicting against West Ham. A spot of realism may well fire the crowd up more than a sit-back-and-enjoy-our-victory-oh oxf*rd've-gone-and-lost-again.
