Don't be surprised at a promotion from within.

Good shout, wouldn't be surprised to see Eamonn Dolan given a go at some point.

I'm surprised that Murty gets mentioned. A great guy with zero managerial experience who (AFAIK) has never expressed a desire to go into management.
I'd rather people learned their trade elsewhere (OK, I know Pards was knew to the business but he'd coached a fair bit....) and came to us once they knew what they were doing.

We could throw in Jimmy, Mick and Adie, although look what good they did...

Barney Not Phil Parkinson.

Why this obsession with him. Yes...great player for us.

Absolutely SHOCKING record as manager at Charlton. I cringe every time
I hear the '5 parkinsons' chant start up. MOVE ON !

That's a bit unfair on Parky - he hardly inherited a team in form....

They won yesterday, he's turned the corner! Remember this is the team that put 4 passed us this season! He did well @ Col U.

Where as Curbishly or Sanchez would seem to be the logical replacements, I have thought for a long time that SSC successor would be the one and only Glen Hoddle !

Gary Johnson or Paul Ince. Both probably would come, both have a good rep for Reading style performance on husbanded resources, both will be ready fro a step up/new job. Ince didn't get a fair crack at Blackburn.

Re my previous comments on Parkinson.

Great loyal player for us. FACT.

As for his managerial record..
1) He resigned from Colchester with a year remaining on his contract.
2) He won 5 out of 24 games whilst manager of Hull. He left by 'mutual consent'.
3) Has zero wins in 10 league games at Charlton.

I just don't see that is enough to follow the legend that Steve Coppell is.

Curbishley with Murts as his trusty assistant accords with me.
Big phil scolari may be job hunting at end of season and with Urz hopefully back in FTSE league he may fancy a bash at lil ole Reading ya never know then again....

this is such a non-thread.

"I feel it is inevitable Coppell will leave in the future."

What a prediction.

No way, I reckon he will be RFC manager until he dies.

If that isn't the case, he is definitely a Judas.

What's the issue?
I wasn't saying he wouldn't retire.
If you read it, I was asking for who you think would succeed him.

Anyway, Ince is a good call.

I fully agree. Parky, Murty and Sanchez get mentioned just because of their association with Reading but I don't see why this is an advantage. OK, they "love the club", but so do most people on this board - I'm sure we'd all give 100% if we were the manager. Coppell had no connection with Reading before joining us and gives 100%; the same goes for Ferguson, Gradi when at Crewe, Taylor when at Watford, or many successful foreign managers. OTOH many people go back to their old club to be seen as returning heroe and fail miserably (e.g. Ricky Hill at Luton). I think all that matters is their prior management record. Murty has none at the moment, and Parky's and Sanchez's are mediocre with probably about one good season each. Martinez is a good shout, or Darren Ferguson.

I agree in principle on not appointing Parky, but you might at least note the not insignificant achievement of getting Colcheter promoted on zero resources. He didn't do well at Hull, and has inherited a mess from Pardew at Charlton. If SSC stays another year and Parky gets Charlton out of relegation and into play-off contention in the CCC, then he'd be a runner.

Some of the suggestions on here would make me question whether I wanted to come back to the Madejski if they were manager of RFC.

Neil Warnock? Successful manager, wouldn't want him here though. His mould is totally against the ethos that this club is trying to instil.

Lawrie Sanchez? No f*ckin way.

Roy Keane? Don't think so. Think he'd struggle at this club. Not right for RFC after Coppell.

Paul Jewell? Decentish manager when given time, but I think the guy's a bit of a tit to be honest.

Brendan Rodgers? Let's wait and see what he does at Watford shall we before thinking he's the best thing since sliced bread.

Parky? No. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Pardew? No. Burnt his bridges here under a cloud, and also hasn't exactly excelled since he left.

Glen Hoddle? No. Has had hardly any true managerial success since he left Swindon 16 years ago.

Paul Ince? Woefully inadequate at Blackburn, had a decent record at MK Dons when given money to spend in a cash-strapped league, but no for me.

Parky? No. Given time at Colchester and made an excellent fist of it and then left under a cloud. Has done nothing at Championship level since, although it remains to be seen what he does with Charlton.

Sammy Lee? Just LOL @ that suggestion

My own suggestion would be for an already established manager with credentials at at least Championship level, and a decent temperament, one that now fits the ethos that RFC has built up to carry on where Coppell will leave us. I think the only currently available managers who have that are Alan Curbishley and Joe Royle (the latter I think wouldn't be successful, he's had his day). Would they come to Reading though?

Of course, new young managers to be given time are Brendan Rodgers, Roberto di Matteo, maybe Paul Ince if he gets another chance somewhere, Simon Grayson maybe, Owen Coyle, and Nigel Clough. If any of those are successful at their current clubs, they should be lined up for Coppell's replacement. I personally hope di Matteo does well, (despite who he manages) as he'll be perfect for RFC if he does IMO.

Colin Lee? ;)

I'd give Curbs a go, much as I hate him for what he did in the past I wouldn't even hate Pards coming back that much... *awaits a lynching*
