Royal Rother For me, Taylor had one really good season but didn't really shine the rest of the time he was with us.

That one really good season was 94/95 and then he left for Leicester. Helped them to promotion and then the injuries crippled him. Free transfer to Wolves and then retired, taking up non-league football with ISTR Cambridge City and someone else before having to pack that in too.

He was brilliant for us in 94/95. That one particular cross still sits firmly in my mind against Wolves? Osborn turned it in with a beautiful header.

With Gilkes down the left and Osborn clever passes we were great to watch that season.

We've got a decent side now but we're not nearly as effective as we should be with the players we've got.

"Helped them to promotion...." Not saying he didn't but wasn't he out injured for the whole of that debut season for Leicester, only making his debut in the Play Off semi, then getting subbed at half time in the final?

Didn't that cross get deflected off the defender? :?

grey_squirrel Osborne and Taylor were a class centre mid partnership definately on a par with Sidwell/Harper.

Taylor was v much a winger, m8 :|

Can't agree either with Rother's assertion that Taylor was a one-season wonder. While I can recall a time that a young Taylor's name was booed when it was read over the tannoy (and fans of a certain age would have you believe that giving players stick is a modern phenomenon :| ), he had a fantastic 92/93 scoring some top drawer goals including a fine strike in a surprise cup draw at Maine Road as McGhee finally got a winning team together, he played near enough every game in a championship winning 93/94 season chipping in with some important goals, as he did in 94/95. Good player for Reading; along with Adie Williams and Gylfi, he is the best home grown product I have seen graduate to the first team (too young to have seen Webb play for RFC).

And FTR I would pick every player of the 94/95 vintage over each and every single one of their equivalents in this current mediocre Reading side.

Agree with that Floyd, but then it's pretty difficult and obvious not to agree!

grey_squirrel Osborne and Taylor were a class centre mid partnership definately on a par with Sidwell/Harper.

Never forget Scotty's 80 yard steaming run very late on at the Tranmere defence in the SF PO in 1995 in the mud at Elm Park. Did everything but score! Tremendous speed, agility and stamina.

Shame they both fell to the billy big boots syndrome and thought they could do better elsewhere........and didn't. Taylor was a local lad and unfortunately succombed to a terminal knee injury not long after he left us. A real shame. A real talent. Got the feeling he never really appreciated the Southbank though unlike Dylan.

I don't think they were anywhere near as good as Sidwell and Harper.

Osborn yes would have made the 05/06 team not Taylor - was played out wide most of the time (Gooding played in centre?) and even that season was by no means a regular till late on in the season.

Sidwell > Taylor

but

Osborn >>>>>>>>>Harper

So, on balance I'd go with the Osborn/Taylor partnership everytime.

My strongest memory of Taylor was the first minute of his debut appearance.

We had had a number of young players make the odd appearance in the previous few years but they had generally looked out of their depth and boys in a man's game.

Taylor came on, very slight, baby faced and a bit gangly, but a minute after coming on went into a crunching 50/50 challenge, sprang back up and carried on chasing and harrying. I may not have rated him as highly as some but he certainly made an impression on me.

Surprised that no one else mentioned that Taylor's name being announced over the PA at Elm Park inevitably resulted in a high squeaked response of "Scotty". He, like Williams & Lovell, improved greatly during McGhee's tenure. Taylor went from being an also ran to a first team regular within a really short space of time. Having lived in Leicester, he was very highly rated by their fans. Isn't he bald and fat now???

I'll never forget that mazy dribble from his [Taylor] own box in the 2nd leg of the Tranmere play off semi final - if only he put the ball in the back of the net

And the 4-5 chances at Wembley too.

Thinking about it he reminds me of Gylfi.

That was his natural position yes, but when we played 5-3-2 in the play-off losing season he was usually one of the 3 in the middle with Gilkes and Bernal as the wingbacks.

Likes a tackle does Mr Taylor.

That game against Wolves in 94/5 was one of the best I saw at EP. Full house, tv cameras, abuse of the FSB, great goals and even better volleys.

I could watch that all day long (3' 04" in)

Why was McGhee getting abuse in that game? Because it was on TV so he might be watching?
