CountryRoyal Not sure if Mourinho could really be deemed that successful of a return...

He won a league and cup, so there was some success there.

I think most people would accept another league title from Brian...

Brendon Mackenzie Returning successes off the top of my head, obviously there will be a lot more.

Jose
Howe
Pulis
Coppell at palace
Pearson
Taylor at Watford

Truth is not many managers go back so this never go back shit is mainly sky sports bollox to be fair.

Paul Sturrock at Plymouth too.

M8 you're a complete amateur

Royal Lady
Terry Burton is a good choice as assistant/coach or whatever his title will be. McD and him played together at Arsenal and have been friendly ever since - therefore, McD trusts him to the hilt. Also Burton won't suffer fools gladly and won't take any shite from any divas

Not sure Burton and McDermott played together, Burton may have managed McDermott in the Arsenal youth team, but as you say, very good appointment, especially to get a 63 year old to leave a Technical Director's post in the Premiership and don the tracksuit again in the Championship.

I won't be reading through all the comments but I sincerely hope that someone has pointed out the obvious!

On Sunday we need to play "Return of the Mack" whilst Brian walks out to greet the fans.

Otherwise I will be very, very dissapointed in all involved in the club.

Well I think it's good to have a manager who isn't just here for career progression, and it strikes me as a canny appointment to have Burton alongside him.

I hope they can also get a younger man in to work alongside those two and Kuhl with a possible view to succeeding McDermott from inside the club when he eventually leaves. Maybe Reid will hang around and be that man, but I'd guess he might just be a Clarke man who's days will be numbered.

I wonder if sassima will sing a song for him, I like the idea of Angels by Robbie Williams with the word Angels changed for Brian. I like a good ballad

Managers across the board will fail at some point or other. You have rare exceptions of course like Wenger but even Ferguson was famously nearing the chop at one point in his tenure.

IMHO football fans and perhaps the wider football world place too much importance on the role of a manager and cling too rigidly to the concept that a manager is either "good" or "bad". Of course it's an important cog in the machine but it's not the only one and success in one job does not mean success in another.

Summary - debating whether returning managers are successful or not is pointless. They're no more or less successful than managers who go to other clubs. The fact Brian has worked here before isn't going to materially affect the performance of our latest squad of deadbeats for the rest of the season.

Coppelled_Streets For every Eddie Howe there's a Kevin Keegan. More often than not it doesn't work out, but we can only hope for the best. Personally I feel he 'could' take us up, but I don't believe he'd keep us there, and these Thai's wouldn't mess around, and the first sign of struggle he'd be off again.

Technically that makes it 50-50 not more often than not.

And so far we've had Pulis, Howe, Mourinho (briefly  ) and Redknapp mentioned... Coppell didn't do bad at Palace either. Vs your Keegan, so it actually looks pretty favourable anecdotally.

Where do Martin Allen's 4 spells at Barnet fit into all this going back mumbo jumbo?

I'm not sure where the claim of Gunter objecting to Brian's appointment came from but it's clearly BS.

Looking at Terry Burtons CV Gunter is listed as a successful project of Burton's.

Interesting cv.

Longhorn1970 I love the heart warming optimism filling the room but we are talking about owners who know zilch about football ...

Welcome to the board btw Longhorn1970

What's that got to do with anything?

Given how shit he was in the Premier League, and replaced in January, I'd say he'd be listed as an unsuccessful project of Brian's.

I'd settle for a journeyman manager in the current climate

Technically Pardew'smost successful time with us as his second spell in charge here....

Nigel Clough has just returned to Burton and Warnock had 2 spells at Palace and QPR, although I cannot see a context in which the words Warnock and success can be linked.

Does the ex-scout from Arsenal hold a record of having been sacked and re-employed by two clubs in a row ?

Reading - Sacked
Leeds - Sacked
Leeds - Re-Employed
Reading - Re-Employed

We should have listened to his words as we failed in the premiership, "We Move On"... ...he also said something about never going back as well... ...well what happened there ?

...it is with amazement that I see some of you gushing over him ?

This is clearly the dawn of our darkest knights that are ahead of us.

Expect a mid - low table finish now. He'll not improve on the position that the Mighty Steve did for us. History shows with his last spell with us as we were destroyed game after game...

...the good news is - some of us are doubters and can see this for what it is. We will do our best to share the light with you and help you to understand how we as a club should have progressed.

Bring back Steve ( any versions ) over the mess and destruction that we'll now be subject to. :(

Do you see ?

yep.

And, reading Thou Voice (NEMSA's thought-provoking football expert) just there shows we are already into the "sack the manager" stuff.

Avoid this place

Well, that would be after he rescued a poor season and took us to the PL as Champions I guess?

He also did pretty well to receive a Premier League Manager of the Month award after being destroyed every game.

Brain's arrival for his first stint transformed a squad of Brendan Rodgers deadbeats. He can do it again.
