we could have some real fun here putting (shirt to read xxxxx) after these names. I can think of some excellent ones for our numbers 9 and 22.

er... why?.... Are we about to sign another Taylor?

Club's claiming it's a personal preference. More alarmingly the Twitter feed just described him as a 'young forward' suggesting another stop gap up front.

Probably wants it to match his shirts from last year (which, somewhat ridiculously, were initialled to avoid confusion with S. Taylor).
"Forward" and "midfielder" would both be good ways of describing Taylor, he's mostly a #10 but can play on the wing, as a genuine central midfielder or up front. As Nameless says, he's also played full back.

HRK getting #9 irritates me, but given Pog is camping on #7 I guess it makes sense. I also prefer Morrison having #15 and Karacan having #4, but I'm sure I'll get used to those changes.

I have a solution.
9 Hal Robson-Kanu (shirt to read Le Fondre)

That should appease fans who don't go to games as they won't know the difference and those who bought the number 9 shirt last season.

I think there's some people reading far too much into squad numbers.

Willing to give HRK a chance playing consistently up front but I hope to god we sign someone else to go along side him and Pog. Obvious highlight is Drenthe not having a number, means he's definitely OUT. Many have pointed out numbers mean nothing but 11 for Obita indicates he'll be used more as a winger than a full back which is disappointing IMO. Hope we sign a left back in that case as Kelly is diabolical there as is Cummings.

Also pleased to see Tshibola, Kuhl and Tanner all given relatively low numbers, all implies they'll be very much involved, same for Jack Stacey, not a low number but he's not in the U21 side anymore so he's obviously considered first team level, good luck to them all this coming season, could be huge for them.

some of those people being the players.

Adkins isn't going to pick someone just because their squad number is lower than 12.

I'm disappointed Reading fans everywhere were not offered the change to change number. I would have opted for 12, as we're the 12th man... but since McCleary already has 12 we would have to follow Reading buses example and make ours the 12a..... Although as we're not eligible to play, 99 might be a good shout as everyone loves a 99 (maybe not as much as a 69, but it's family game).

1 through 11 have a certain status attached to them, and players are notoriously superstitious too. I doubt any of the players think their squad number has much meaning as to who's going or playing though.

It means he wanted to be number 11. It doesn't mean Adkins is going to play him on left wing.

how many more chances are we going to give Hal, he got a cracking new deal last summer and was still poor. He plays alright for 20 mins here & there gets picked next game and doesn't produce, make or break season for him methinks

After a solid end to the Premier League failure, he was supposed to push on and dominate the Championship last season but he completely failed to replicate his end of season Premier League form. If he could consistently be that player he'd be the first name on the team sheet no question, but he doesn't.
