Crowbar6753
Crowbar6753 Pat Earles was the scorer in the Bishop Stortford cup defeat in the mud! 2931 in attendance.
Reading team: Fearon, Williams, White, Beavon, Hicks, Wood, Bason, Stant, Dixon, Doherty, Donnellan. I remember the game and the squad well but for some reason i cannot remember the guy called Bason? Anyone enlighten me on this guy?

This was a pretty bang average to poor Reading side from what i remember. Beavon was ok and surprised Dixon didn't bang a goal in against a non league team! I think Phil Stant was an Army player if memory serves me right and Doherty and Donnellan weren't much! Martin Hick's was a legend, all legs and like bambie on ice, a stereotypical div 4 center back :D I guess these were the dark days a few years before things slowly took off :D where was Gilksy?????

Gilkes was another couple of years away, he pushed David Crown out of the starting XI

With ref to Phil Stant, I can recall him playing against us for Fulham in the 1990/1 season, whilst the Gulf war was on and people* were shouting at him that as a reservist he should have been out there.

* stupid people

With ref to Brian Bason, I have a Palace supporting extended family member who once said that Bason was a shoe-in for the all-time worst ever Palace XI

Royals and Racers
Clyde1998 Looks like slow ticket sales thus so (shock!): 1,562 home tickets sold based on the seat map (not counting disabled or hospitality).

Carlisle appear to have sold 536 out of their 559 allocation so far.

Any chance Clyde of an update- new manager ticket sale surge ?

It's 1,946 standard home sales. Going up in a similar way I'd expect it to the closer we get to games.

Carlisle seem to have sold their 559 now.

The latest update is 2,423 home sales (again without disabled or hospitality sales), so maybe we'll get up to around 3,000 by tomorrow. Certainly on track for our worst FA Cup home fan crowd at the Madejski Stadium (currently the 3,592 against Fleetwood last season).

Just out of interest, I take it that the ticket office still opens on match days to allow walk-ups who decide to come along late?

Yeah and the online tickets are on sale until kick-off usually - albeit the prices go up a few hours before kick-off.

The more I think about it, the more I think it will be a strong side tomorrow. New manager needs to get a good start and this provides a good opportunity to see what the players can do.

Will be interesting to see how he sets up tactically.

Donnellon was a winger signed from Watford, Doherty was playing in Local football in Reading when we signed him.

Holy Cynical, now you've got my brain working!!! It has to have been as I'm not sure it was much earlier and we started picking up as a team after our 12 straight wins starting the 1985 season i believe.

13 !!! Bloody plastics
Actually, our form went to shit after the 13th win - we drew at home to the bottom club and then lost at Bury

I haven't been to madstad for a long time, I still watch most goals though.
Disappointed that so many good players left over the years
Been watching Bayern a lot this season and last, who is that Oliise fella!!

Bayern play forward moving football not tippy tappy side to side,, I would like to see Reading try it, it's not long ball.

Maybe we could get Olise back he has a £106m buy out clause

windermereROYAL 17 quid a ticket, don`t think they`ll be too many takers there, I think the club have shot themselves in the foot here. a tenner with no concessions would be far more realistic.

Crazy, cut the price get as many fans in as possible

According to my copy of "Biscuits and Royals", Brian Bason was here 1882-83, made 41 appearances no goals. I don't remember him, either

I’m not surprised no-one remembers him, 1882 was a helluva long time ago.

I agree I can’t see LEAM wanting to lose to Carlisle in his first game

It was absolutely a depressing performance in a relegation season. Brian Bason wore the no.10 shirt, I think.

Yep it was an average/poor side as was relegated that season, despite Dixon being the top scorer in the country.

Was Frank Waller's last days as chairman (Maxwell stuff happened later that season) and we ran a squad with around 15 professionals as there was next to no money coming into the club with gates around the 2k mark.

This was a relegation that did reset the club though, with Smee coming in and in three years we were in the second tier.

Good call re later post 1970/s memory lane thread....

Don’t know if it’s changed but in the FA Cup both sides have to agree on pricing .

It might be that Carlisle didn’t want anything too cheap if, in their view, it would affect their 50/50 receipt split.

They may even be looking at their chances of progressing and want a few thousand extra home fans added to a new manager “bounce” benefiting us.

TBF, it was written into League rules back then that we always had to lose to Bury whenever we played them!

Still a tenner and I think they only take card payments.

Oh and 10% off in bar and on food if you have a match ticket I believe. It used to be only for STAR members but I believe they extended it for this season. Many of the staff are unaware of this deal so may need to go and check. Quote David Berry who I think is their Sales and Marketing Manager.

I wonder how much Richardson knows about the players.

Will he have been discreetly in attendance at games before today?

Have the club been supplying him with videos for weeks?

Or did he come into his first training sessions with little real idea apart from a few words (Wing's good, Elliott's inconsistent, O'Connor and Williams are just starting to form a partnership)?

I would be amazed if he didnt know he was in the running and Hunt's job was in danger.

Plus, as a manager likely to manage in Champ/L1 It’s his job to know the teams and players in the divisions.

As soon as negotiations started I'd expect him to start researching, watching videos of games and training.

He's had about 3 days in charge... if he hasn't watched at least six games from recordings by now I'd be amazed.

Think he’s well organised so will have things covered, he was apparently speaking to Lewis Wing, as he’s the club captain, before his appointment was announced to introduce himself and presumably allay fears, suss out the changing room feeling etc.
