floyd__streete I had to double-check the date of the posts above :!:

Didn't think he was special at all tonight, in fact he was the chief exponent of much of the sloppy passing going on :!:

I worry about some of you lot!

Guthrie had a pretty good game last night. He was, yet again, at the heart of pretty much everything we did well and he was controlling our play in a way that we've not seen since Harper was in his pomp.

He may well have given the ball away a few times, but when you're taking the responsibility to get on the ball and make things happen then that's always going to be the case.

You lot sound as blinkered on his performances as Wax Jacket is about Gerrard.

I thought Guthrie was our man of the match, closely followed by his midfield partner Karacan, and it's great to see those two always making an option and always looking to pass intelligently. As I mentioned elsewhere, the movement from those two, McAnuff and the two wide players is a big positive as we no longer just playing in a rigid formation and that movement will really help us going forward next season.

Edit: MotM after McCarthy, forgot about him!

Not one of his better games - but certainly not one of his worst.

Yeah that's about right. He was okay.

MOTM (for us). Great delivery, took the ball from the centre backs and was looking for it on the wing and was always the first to show for the ball when one of the players needed help. Lots of great passes, short and long.

I'm not a great lover of statistics to reflect a players contribution but compare these three players from last night.

A: Passes 59 (92% complete), 5 key passes, crosses 11 (8 completed), 8 Long Balls (8 completed)

B: Passes 70 (86%), 8 key passes, crosses 4 (1 complete), 2 long balls (1 completed)

C: Passes 87 (95%), 0 key passes, crosses 1 (0 complete), 5 long balls (5 completed)

Player A is Guthrie, B is Silva and C is Yaya Toure

To say that Guthrie was wasteful and sloppy with his passing is pretty odd when only Karacan and McAnuff get close to his completion percentage and Guthrie made the most passes in the team, 44 more than McAnuff and 25 more than both McLeary and Robson-Kanu.

St. Brynjar Running the show.

Excellent news that he wants to stay and can only see himself playing at Reading next year.

When did he say he wants to stay?

i didnt see mcanuff or karacan give the ball away really stupidly on numerous occasions though, nor did i see them pass balls into the stand.

and tbf i said he was his usual mix of decent and poor.and amply praised his attitude and contribution.

So it wasn't just me who thought he was really good last night and moved the ball around nicely......not sure why people are saying he constantly gave the ball away :?

Well they aren't my stats but, according to whoscored, Guthrie only gave the ball away 4 or 5 times from 59 passes. McAnuff only made 15 passes in his 70 minutes on the pitch so yeah, it's unlikely he gave it away so frequently!

My eyes told me that McAnuff struggled to get into the game on really get on the ball. I saw Karacan and Guthrie all over the place getting and keeping the ball. I don't remember either making a sloppy or stupid pass or one that just went out of play.

melonhead and tbf i said he was his usual mix of decent and poor.and amply praised his attitude and contribution.

If his usual mix is dominating our possession, making as many key passes as the rest of the team put together and mixing up his play as well as he did last night then I'm all for him doing the same week in week out.

I am with BrendyMellons on this. Guthrie did some good stuff, shows a lot of potential, also does really stupid stuff and gives the ball away.

I am particularly not a fan of when he see's a defender about to make a 5 yard sideways pass, barks at them waving his arms, charges back to defence and takes the ball off them, does that funny jumpy-twisty thing he does with his body while looking for a hollywood pass, waves his arms a lot, barks at everyone, ends up making the 5 yard sideways pass that the defender wanted to originally make. Fans look at each other and nod approvingly at this bloke who seems to be taking the game by the scruff of the neck.

^^^ :D yeah, that does happen alot.
quiet a good description of our danny imo.

the guthrie fan club seem to think that any negativity at all is unforgiveable, and he is beyond all criticism.

like i said he did good stuff, & makes himself central to our good play. but on numerous occasions also oxf*rd up.
i have a REAL guthrie hater sat next to me, who loudly points out his every failing, so i know damn well he gave it away and passed it out of play alot more than 5 times.

You're seeing things that didn't happen brendy. Give him a break!

Again a couple of interesting whoscored stats for you. Guthrie had 77 touches. McAnuff had 21, Karacan 58, McLeary 51. Guthrie lost possession 6 or 7 times, McLeary gave it away 11 times, McAnuff 3 or 4.

That's not bad from Guthrie is it?

I think you're way off the mark here brendy. You're remembering a lot of negative stuff from Guthrie (in fact I think you're imagining a lot of it) but not putting it into context by all the good stuff he did and the sheer volume of times he, and Karacan, were on the ball.

Guthrie did give the ball away sloppily a few times, but it's quite clear that the vast majority of his passing was good. Most of his poor passes were either ambitious longer balls that weren't accurate enough, but were good ideas. I'll take that over balls that our winger can try to chase down but has no real hope of winning. Because when he does get them right, they create opportunities.

Or it was a case of him and the recipient not reading each other and the ball being wrong for the movement and vice versa. That'll improve with time and training.

He was very good last night/

nope.
i saw both, and commented on both.
im not the one who refuses to even acknowledge that he did anything wrong at all.

i think he was ok.i think karacan shaded it for me in the middle last night, because he did less of the bad stuff than danny.
imo
