Not exactly gonna be a carnival atmosphere is it? Either we win and spend the game glued to radios to hear the Fulham result, draw and hope against hope that Fulham and Birmingham lose, or lose and put the icing on our poor season.

A vision of the future?

by rhroyal » 04 May 2008 13:31

Last night I was so down about football I ended up dreaming about it. And, truth be told, it was realistic enough. We got a scrappy late winner against Derby off Kevin Doyle's knee, and a Jermaine Defoe hat trick defeated Fulham before I ran around screaming my head off out of delight. Now, for me, the only part that was unrealistic was that my friend who supports Fulham didn't start screaming at me or lash out because of frustration. A few seasons ago when Soton went down there was a fan who had a dream about the Southampton v Man Utd game and it all happened exactly as he dreamt, and as he had put down a bet in the bookmakers about the exact same events happening at 1000-1 or so he made a killing.

I don't believe in crap like that, it was probably some made up story or something and I have no expectation of my dream happening on Sunday, but surely it sounds realistic enough?

Coppelled Streets But I can't bring myself to go. If it turns out to be a day that we all want to forget, relegation confirmed, the team looking half arsed and clueless as we did at The Manor Ground all those years ago, it'll hurt to much and I will be terrible company for all.

to paraphrase woody allen - It's not that I'm afraid of relegation, I just don't want to be there when it happens.

I'm actually deeply regretting agreeing to take a guy from work to the game. He's not really a Reading fan*, but wanted to go to a game, but if we go down I really don't want to be stuck in a car for 3 hours or so with someone not as pissed off as I'll be.

* I did have a shade of guilt about depriving a true Reading fan of a ticket (although I could be doing them a favour as it turns out), but the fact that they were on general sale to anyone with 5 points kind of hints at anyone missing out not really trying too hard to get a ticket.

If we end up with more points than the 18th placed team, we deserve to stay up. If we don't, we deserve to go down. No ifs or buts, Newcastle by your logic deserve to go down. You could argue we don't deserve to stay up because of our small-time approach, but I think that'd also be wrong. West Ham last year were a special case, they didn't deserve to stay up for obvious reasons.

My point is we have the easiest task (on paper) in the final game of the season! The team only have themselves to blame for the position they find themselves in, i hope we do it though! I do think Portmouth will get some kind of result at home to Fulham even with players missing...so if we cant beat Derby...
