Lita cleared after claims withdrawn

by Skin » 18 Sep 2006 11:22

hooray

The 21-year-old was questioned by police in Bristol on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after a 24-year-old local man claimed he had been attacked in the Haymarket area of the city.

The England Under-21 striker, who signed for the Premiership new boys last summer from Bristol City for £1million, had been accused of leaving his alleged victim with a black eye.

But an Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said that the Congo-born striker would face no further action after the complaint was withdrawn.

"The 21-year-old man bailed last month pending further enquiries will face no further action," he said.

"The 24-year-old who made the allegation has now withdrawn the complaint."

Lita was fined by Reading boss Steve Coppell after his arrest, which came just hours after his team had lost to Wigan on August 26.

Things really have taken a turn for the worse if Lita is relegated to drinking in the Monks of a Saturday night post game.

Joking aside, I do hope that this is not a case of a victim withdrawing a complaint under pressure of any sort. I assume that he did get a black eye, and some explanation of how that happened would be good.

Perhaps they talked it over, laughed it off as alcohol, hugged, patted each other on the back in a display of manly friendship and he dropped the charges?

I'm sure I read a report that the victim had been a "friend" of Lita's for some 18 months.

I am right?

Maybe he still wants to be friends.

Maybe you'll hear them from Steve Coppell in due course. I certainly think that will be the case if he ever steps out of line again.

Though hopefully he's finally learned his lesson.

No, this isn't innocence. He did it, that much is evident as he never denied it and the club never denied it. Just means the charges were dropped.

I think he was also fined for being in Bristol that late at night and breaking undertakings he had previously given to SC about staying away from places where there might be trouble.

I can't say I'm surprised. GC is right the guy was supposed to be his "mate" and it's got to be pretty hard to press charges against a mate. not going to endear you to mutual friends now is it. I imagine words were had, and a bit of cash exchanged hands.

But then I'm a cynic and think Leroy was guilty as sin.

Sorry? It has something to do with all of us if justice is being dispensed by threats from bullies rather than by the courts. There are too many cases that fail to reach justice because victims and/ or witnesses are given a quiet chat to imply that giving evidence might be harmful to their health. If that doesn't concern you then so be it - but I find that a bit sad.

Is this a case of such a threat? Who knows, I am simply saying that I hope it is not, and that in this case the victim withdrew his complaint because it was not a violent unprovoked assault but a tiff between mates.

Mind you, either way it still raises questions about the temperament of the attacker if he finds it normal behaviour to thump a mate and give him a black eye.
