Sonks to answer Senegal call

Sonko ready for international bow
13-12-2006 11:28
Reading defender Ibrahima Sonko has revealed he is ready to make his entry onto the international stage.
The Royals stopper has previously rejected the chance to represent Senegal, preferring to concentrate on establishing himself at the Madejski Stadium.

But Sonko, who is also eligible for France, told the Reading Evening Post: "I still haven't decided who I will play for.
"I am not just waiting for France. If Senegal call me I would probably play for them now. I've never ruled them out.

"I have been saying 'no' in the past but I was always waiting for the right time. I wanted to be settled with Reading in the Premiership, but I now think I am ready to take my career a step forward."

So basically, if Senegal call him up again he may go unless France show an interest. Same as always then really.

its quite obvious that he'd prefer to play for France, but may "settle" for Senegal if no interest is shown by the FFA

I hope he does get a call from France because otherwise we will lose him for ages every time the African Cup of Nations comes round.

True. The African cup of Nations seems to come round more regularly than I'm a celebrity....Get me out of here!

He should play for France and I hope he does. France are bloody stupid if they don't pick him soon and carry on with the likes of Boumsong.

He should play for the country he feels most at "home" to, not one that will give him an easy route onto the International stage.

His family all live in France, so I would imagine that is where his true loyalty lies. His brother tried to lease a house so that some of his family could come over and settle in England, so it looks as though Sonko has definitely settled in now

I don't suppose that Sonko has an English great aunt?

Should hang out for France. If not already, he's going to be good enough to play for them soon.

He clearly wants to play for France, but will settle for Senegal - it's not much of a story really

Sat next to his agent (or some such) on the way back from the West Ham game and they were chatting about the negotiations with the FFA then... so it's obviously not miving very quickly and this latest bit of re:hashed old story is indicating that he might now have to settle for Senegal...

Maybe. Or maybe not. I don't think he knows yet, which is part of the problem...

Think he might as well wait. Don't want him getting injured!

Indeed, they don't have any other decent centre backs so Sonko should be picked.

Fair play to him as well, he seems a decent bloke and he's one brilliantly for us.

I would rather see crappier center backs play for France. Sonko for Senegal, he's too good for France.
