Silver Fox BLOLatter confirms he expects 2022 world cup to be played in the winter

As stated before, I just really don't see a problem with that. Other countries stop their season to play the world cup so I am sure Europe can do it. If moving the tournament to another time of the year means another part of the world gets to enjoy it then I think that is a good thing. Would be nice to see the season extended here and summer games played in the evening.

(Agree though that if your proposal was based around playing it in the summer it seems ridiculous you can change it after you win)

Now hinting that other countries would host games, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait. They're making it up as they go along, and probably regretting the original decision.

Whilst I agree, it's just the fact the tournement was put out there and bids were made for a June/July timespan. That was what was bid for, if they are unable to meet those requirements they shouldn't have bid.

Also with hosting games in other countries, does this now make it a joint bid - would Kuwait, Oman etc have a case to qualify automatically as a host nation?

As a side debate, Louis Van Gaal said this week that the scheduling for international tournament qualifying should be changed in the future and all qualifying should take place in a mini tournament just before the actual event.

He reckons this would produce a higher quality of football in the final tournament (teams being together longer etc) and would help domestic leagues by giving the oppportunity to have breaks in the season where previously there would have been international matches

If I were one of the losing bids I'd be calling for a recount and suing FIFA for the costs of submitting my bid when it's obvious that the decision in no way relates to those bids submitted.

I've just read on the BBC that the time the World Cup is staged is down to the host nation. They can apply to have it moved and all is needed is a FIFA vote. It is just played in June/July due to tradition. This has always been in the FIFA rules apparently, so there wouldn't be a leg to stand on for any upset bidding parties.

Didn't know that. Surprising this hasn't ben raised before particularly when Mexico have hosted the tournament.
The idea of a winter World Cup is not such a bad thing as a one off but wouldn't want to see it happen beyond that.

Hosting the world cup in whatever season has the most comfortable conditions possible (within the possibilities of the way football seasons are arranged) for the host nation makes perfect sense and I have no issue with that.

It makes no sense at all. I am a reading fan, I go and watch reading and don't want me season interrupted by some silly world cup put on at a dumb ass time because its too hot. The world cup is SECOND priority to club football, so re-arranging it is inconvenient.

Moving the 2022 World Cup to December/January will disrupt 3 seasons of football for those countries such as the bulk of European Leagues, who have football as a winter sport.

In England, it will disrupt the Premier League and the Championship, and also disrupt the FA Cup. We could well have to have football played over the Summer to compensate.

Probably more important (from an international sports politics point of view) the IOC are concerned that it will disrupt (TV viewing) of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

On the plus side, everyone is usually broke come Jan, so it'll put something half decent on the telly to watch.

Exactly

Just seems like they voted for them without even considering the problems that could arise.

As I mentioned before, if so does that mean all the gulf states will qualify automatically as hosts?
