Analysis of the Benteke pen on R5L has been getting me riled

Exactly at what point did commentators/press beside the change the rules on penalties? And why have the FA/refs not come out and clarified

Not seen the pen mind. But the comments were along the lines of "well there was the faintest of touches, but not enough to warrant that kind of dive. So the pen was really harsh, but on our slomo reply we can see that he has touched him in the box..... so its definitely a pen" Grrrrrrrrrrree

Just bloody where does it say you're not allowed contact with someone in the box FFS? You not allowed to foul them

I really wish the FA would tell everyone to shut up about it, and that contact has to be worthy of a proper foul. It would really protect the refs aswell

I remember hearing Bale comment in a Sky interview when he'd been booked for diving that he "felt contact so had every right to go down"...... and no pfucker challenged that viewpoint

+1 Every right to go down? oxf*rd off, if you're not impeded you should get nothing.

However, the refs are part of the problem, because they only blow up if you do go down, whether you're impeded or not. They actively teaching players to dive because of it.

Retrospective punishments are what it's about

as Stan Collydog suggested on Talksqawk......you cannot change the result, but a four game ban for the Drogba impersonator after the event may focus the mind, whilst the FA sort out this current trend of teams and players cheating their way to results through the leagues

I remember Patrick Vieira talking about a penalty he won in a Champions League tie where he said he "thought" he felt contact so had every right to go down and no-one said "Hang on a minute , Patrick......"

What bugs me almost more than diving is the old Andrew Johnson penalty. Take a heavy touch then start going down with your trail leg dangling so the defender/goalkeeper can't avoid making contact.

It was a penalty though, if people think otherwise I'd love to know why?

Agreed, particularly if it's now also agreed and discussed on this very board that you jump a failed tackle that's also a penalty then what's the bloody issue!!

So are we really in a place where ANY touch on a player is a pen?

I guess games are going to finish with scores like 47-46 then

Because it's Liverpool who are a bunch of fcuking underachieving nancy boys pricks.

Not convinced it was a penalty, despite what everyone says. Still, hoping they're very depressed for next Friday.

But what contact doesn't lead to a pen and what does?

In this instance, the defender slid in so was "out of control" and his knee took Benteke's foot - that is a foul, and if it had been on the halfway line then we wouldn't be having this conversation. He undoubtedly made a meal of it but given that ref's seem loath to give fouls* when a player tries to carry on then you can't be surprised he did.

*(can you imagine the furore if Benteke kept his feet, failed to get a shot on target in his next stride and then the ref correctly gave a pen?)

soft penalty, but correctly given.

I was pleased as it puts a nagging relegation doubt in Palace's mind which could affect them for next Friday.

See you in the Bree, Leon

Yeah there was the slightest of contacts but not convinced either. If you wanted to see a clear cut penalty over the weekend Muniesa's rugby tackle on Oscar - unbelievable that wasn't given.

only seen one replay of the Benteke incident and it looked massively homo (slightest contact on one foot = both legs giving way in dramatic fashion)

I haven't seen the Benteke incident.
My annoyance is solely in the widely held view that any contact = penalty

Everybody should be challenging that viewpoint

very much agreed.

H8 it when at half time some panel of benders will watch super slo mo over and over even zooming right in then once they can establish contact is made they all conclude that yep, there was contact so it's a penalty. (they then go on to absolutely castig8 the ref for getting it wrong)

The Palace defender did pull out of the challenge by pulling his legs out of the way but his momentum made his knee slightly clip Benteke's foot. He went down very easily. It's just one of those where if it's against you, you'd feel aggrieved when you consider there are more blatant penalties every week for shirt pulling from corners etc.

Now that IS contact that should be awarded as a pen.

Not a f*cking slight graze of the skin on the way past

Yeah, that's what I saw as well.

And, for the want of #nobeef, yeah, agree on the next post as well.

how do you account for things like leverage, balance or having one of your bases removed

all things where slight contact may actually bring a player down
