biscuitman Weird.

Not as weird as Robert Pires going to non-league before earning a contract at Villa. A fit Robbie Fowler (goal poacher) > Simon Church.

Can some old people tell me - are there similar players to Fowler from yesteryear?

By similar I mean completely burnt out by 30, but carried on playing anyway, at consecutively lesser clubs, for no apparent reason?

Michael Owen will also fit this bill when he joins Bolton or someone in the summer.

Owen is a great shame because as a kid he was brilliant to watch. Lightening fast and up front with Fowler was an exciting partnership.

You only have to look at someone like Kevin Philips who at 38 still has the hunger to play and the knack of scoring goals. Fowler was brilliant, and then almost over night it was over. What a waste, and only himself to blame, there can't be any excuse for it.

Its often overlooked just how serious his knee injury was. No surprise that he was never quite the same after it.

'greed. I was just having a look at his record and you can't really pick any holes in it. His worst form was at Man City* where he had a 1 in 4 ratio (played 80, scored 20).

1993–2001 Liverpool 236 (120)
2001–2003 Leeds United 30 (14)
2003–2006 Manchester City 80 (20)
2006–2007 Liverpool 30 (8)
2007–2008 Cardiff City 13 (4)
2008-2008 Blackburn Rovers 3 (0)
2009–2010 North Queens Fury 26 (9)
2010–2011 Perth Glory 28 (9)

Seeing Owen play in the flesh rather than just on TV revealed what a truly great player he was: Always probing along the back four, always thinking about scoring goals. In his prime, I don't think England has had a better striker in the 25-30 years I have been watching football (including Lineker and Shearer in that). Hungry for goals, lightning quick, excellent touch, great spring fro such a small chap and superb finishing ability. It truly is a massive shame that he's knees seem to be held together by chewing gum. He's the best striker I have ever seen play

Players that could have been great but seemed to disappear overnight:
Francis Jeffers (anyone see his Englund U21 hatrick at the MadStad?)
Stan Collymore could have made a much better career if his attitude towards the game hadn't absolutely stunk.
