I'll stick my neck out and suggest that next season (assuming the other teams don't all implode and we don't, by some fluke or miracle get promoted) that we'll struggle and be lucky with mid-table

Didn't somebody say something along those lines at the start of this season?

I'm with Rothers on this one, I'd much rather watch the team in the Championship than the Premier League - for now at least and probably for a few years hence. Still, we might have the play-offs to 'look forward' to.

brendywendy only hope now is to gain some confidence from our last few games and get some momentum going into the playoffs
its seeing the potential of this side, having played so well at times this season that hurts so much

and the hope, the hope has been killing me
im actually starting to feel much better now the hope is gone this morning

Yes, as John Cleese said - I can cope with the despair; it's the hope I can't stand.

I think this is a suitable thread for the 2009 league table to be posted:

1) Sheff utd 35 points
2) Swansea 30 points
3) Cardiff 29 points
4) Doncaster 28 points
5) Birmingham 26 points
5) Burnley 26 points
5) Bristol City 26 points
8) Wolves 25 points
8) Watford 25 points
10) Preston 24 points
11) QPR 22 points
11) Ipswich 22 points
11) Derby 22 points
11) Notts Forest 22 points
15) Southampton 21 points
16) Sheff wed 20 points
16) Coventry 20 points
16) Norwich 20 points
16) Blackpool 20 points
20) Reading 19 points
21) Plymouth 17 points
22) Charlton 15 points
23) Barnsley 14 points
24) Crystal Palace 13 points

THe only thing that surprises me is that there are 4 teams who have accumulated less points than us this year.

Dirk Gently
IMAMATEOFJOVSKY Hold on - we've been told on numerous occasions by Sir John Caesar, that this squad is good enough for promotion !!

Hopefully he will now realise that it is pretty average and that his penny pinching approach as a chairman has come home to roost! ..also any ambition he had of selling the club is well and truly buggared!

Hang on - all know that this squad IS good enough for promotion.

The way we played before Xmas and before the Southampton home match - the way we played at both Wolves & Birmingham - proved to all that we ARE good enough.

The most galling thing is that we have long ago stopped playing to our potential, but we certainly are good enough. It's the massive under-achievement that makes it so much more painful.
We were good enough to stay up last season and blew it. We were good enough to go up this season and it appears we've blown it. If our players had put their heart and soul into the last 2 years and just fallen short it would be a disappointment, but the players could be proud. The blame would rest 100% with the management.

However that's not the case. If you look at some teams staying up this season, we were more than capable of surviving last season and the way we've blown away Wolves and Brum and Sheff Utd at Brammall Lane this season shows we were more than capable of winning promotion this time. However the players have once again under performed for half a season. Of course you have to look at Coppell, but the players must shoulder their weight of the responsbility for us being a Championship club too. May they get their wish at the end of the season and move on - I'd love to see them have similar degrees of success to Shorey, Kitson, Sonko and Little, none of whom were successful upon leaving Reading.

Stephen Hunt trying to get into Everton's first team would provide me great amusement, I hope he goes there.

RoyalBlue I remember an equally dismal, couldn't care less performance at Blackpool, around about this time of year, a few years back. IIRC Keith Scott was about the only one who looked like he cared on that occasion.

Definitely not. I was unfortunate enough to be at the game when we played really badly and not at the game when we played so well - and there is no connection there either!!

I can remember some fantastic performances by the teams over the years, that's what makes the periods (not one-offs) of sustained, players couldn't care less, shyte so frustrating.

It would have only taken two more wins to put us up near the top end of the table.

8th, 9th or 10th depending on goals.

It would've been good enough to keep a grip on auto promotion though.

By the same token two less wins and we'd have been rock bottom!

Relegated 1988, 6 years to get promoted (1994)

Relegated 1998, 4 years to get promoted (2002)

Relegated 2008, 2 years to get promoted (2010) :D

Therefore not surprised about our current predicament and not worried how it finishes, PS - long may SC reign.

Not that fine when we've not looked like winning those extra two games and even if we did we'd possibly only have jumped up to 10th!

We were brilliant. First time we saw Dylan Kerr's shirt over head celebration. A load of Blackpool fans celebrated me and my mates after the game telling us we were the best footballing side they had seen in years. Stockport drew with Cardiff IIRC.

A great day, a great performance and Tom Jones got the last pair of shorts in the bag. Blackpool fans genuinely did applaud us off at the end.

Schards#2 Given that the season's over, there were a few positives today - Kelly and Karajan played well and we actually scored a couple.

On the negative side, S Hunt is not fit to wear the shirt and hasn't been since christmas, we'll be lucky to offload him on a free, and Kebe is just shit i'm afraid. The defending for the equaliser was a joke.

Whoever we get in the play offs is the most nailed on winner in history.
