But if you've moved away from the area and start watching another team, especially if they're in another division, you can begin to follow them instead, I've found anyway.
Never understand people who regualarly travel hundreds of miles to go to home games.

Ultimately though it's probably me in the minority here, and it's this kind of loyalty that football clubs use to their advantage and cynically I would say expoilt. Your local cinema puts up the prices, you go elsewhere or buy a DVD instead, your local football club puts up the prices, you keep going anyway and post on here about how scandalous it is.

It carries on until disillusionment outweighs the cost.

Magnus But if you've moved away from the area and start watching another team, especially if they're in another division, you can begin to follow them instead, I've found anyway.

I've found that I can't do that. I don't give a shit about Exeter, never cared about either Manchester teams when I was university up there. Nor did I give a shit about Newbury FC when I was at school there.

.

I've lived away from the area and gone to watch other teams. Seen some top games, been to FA Cup semi finals and European nights. never felt more than a 'spectator' though. Simply didn;t have the emotional attachment that I have to 'my' team.

If I did live hundreds of miles away I'm not sure I'd travel every week to see Reading, but I can see why people do it. You become scared not to !! I know a few people who do silly miles to watch various teams and the journey is part of it for them - in the same way as a few beers and a laugh with mates is part of it for you. In some cases I really believe these people go to MORE games because they have the journey !!

As for the cynic in you, I'd say you might be right if clubs made a profit (although I'd also agree prices are stupid these days). If a club is making a whacking loss because it's fans demand success (and new, better players) then it's inevitable they are going to push prices up to help pay for it all. I'd love to see players wages drop by half, and gate prices follow suit but it won;t happen and if one club did it then the fans of that club would riot. We've had people on HNA saying they would rather the ST prices had stayed as they were and the money spent on players....

Yes indeed, and we even had one hapless poster from the other side of the world asking if he could effectively give money to the club as a donation. Horses for courses and all that, but my goodwill ran out long ago both emotionally and financially.

But when did you last hear about someone asking for their ashes to be scattered outside their local Tesco or Sainsburys.

For many the relationship with their football club is quite different than the normal customer/retailer relationship.

Exactly the point I'm making. And when you put it like that doesn't it make the people who make that choice about their ashes seem a little, well..sad? Little boys who have never grown up.

Yes, it does.

But there's such a mystique and such a media-reinforced image of the "super-fan" that people still fall for it.

Even had a fan come up to us to shake hands on what were trying to do

When did this happen? - Taken from the link above

Mainly though it's about making it affordable, £1 ticket offers and under 16s coming in half price - it's just about making it accessible to everyone.

Kif for a quid has happened many times. U16's are well under half price and I guess it is affordable for the people who go to games. But not for others....

Well no, surely by definition it's affordable for ANYONE of any age who does buy a ticket.

But it is one of those self fulfilling comments. Like saying being a footballer is open to anyone who is good enough.

How many games this season did we operate the kids for a quid scheme? Seems to have passed me by.
