Interesting that you should ask that. I had a quick look back at the story quoted in the first post of this thread. Nowhere in that report does Hammond mention any figure and it does look like the Post has plucked that figure out of thin air.

In the Chronicle Hammond specifically said the £4 million figure was mentioned in 'another paper' was fictitious.

Although it's managed to generate a lot of HNA pages !!

Not sure whether it leaves option the option that it might be a bigger figure of course.

The bit about whether the parachute payment applies to the season gone or the season to come would be answered (would it not) by looking at why the payments are made. They are intended to smooth the adjustment from the mega earnings of the Prem to the lesser earnings of the Championship. So it seems to me they can only be logically applied to the first two seasons after a club is relegated, otherwise on the face of it you have nothing in your first season after you are relegated. Not sure why they are paid at the end of the season, presumably becasue the Prem clubs grab all the cash earlier in the season and the parachute is left until the very end when everyone else has ensured their cash flow has flowed.

I can see income dropping from this season to next by £4 m easily. ST just reduced by about £100, thats £1m, if seats drop by the same ammount thats another £1m, if we are doing not so well then the average could fall by 2000 easily, thats well over another 500k, at least, and take away the cuop run and you get to about £4m out of the budget, as you look ahead.

As the season progresses tho we might start well, we might get on the TV more often, crowds might stay similar rather than fall, we might have two good cup runs, then and only then could we decide that we could spend it, after it has been earned, not before. Usually the way JM runs things, I have high hopes for next season, and see no need tobe negative at all.

Reading boss Brian McDermott admits he may have to sell in order to balance the books this summer.
The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jimmy Kebe, Shane Long and Adam Federici have all been linked with moves in recent weeks.
And McDermott realises the club may have to sell to help finances.
"I'm sure clubs are looking at our players, I think that is inevitable," he said.
"But it doesn't scare me, in fact I like it. It shows we've been performing well.
"If clubs come in for our players I can't do anything about it and I can't say one way or the other whether players will go.
"If something comes our way we will consider it on its merit. There will be a shortfall in revenue next season and that is always a concern.
"Every player has a price, that's football and that's the league we are in.
"But I knew the situation when I took the job. I went into it with my eyes open and I'm completely upbeat about the future."

True. It's just that the team really appeared to be working well, the team being greater than the sum of its parts if you like. Remove one of those parts and you lose more than just one player's contribution. Maybe I'm just suffering from post-election blues.

How do you reconcile this with the obvious need (and frequent demand) for there to be continual improvement ?

We need to bring in new players, which by definition means we have to move on old ones !!

I'm unclear what business lesson needs to be learned from last season. I'm sure it would have been an excellent business decision to hold on to Doyle, Hunt , Bikey or Harper. We brought in a lot of money for players who wanted to leave and in certain cases deserved to be allowed to move on.

Agree we shouldn't (and there is no sign we plan to) go out and flog every asset we have. But we are no different to all the other clubs in the league and there will be times when the money on offer for one or two players will just be too much to refuse. We've never made a habit of selling at the first oppoortunity though and I can;t really see there's a reason why we will now.

The silence is slightly interesting though. After this end of season board meeting we have always had the usual comments from Hammond about how things went well and they are now pursuing targets and trying to wrap up deals.

I think for the 1st time since Pardew's depature we may have a difference of opinion at the top. Be interesting what comes out the next few weeks.

If you read all the quotes in the current "Royals have to sell" headlines, Mcdermott says the meeting went well, they know where they stand, there are costs to be cut, but we still hope to make signings and but are not in a position to reject silly bids.

I'm unclear what business lesson needs to be learned from last season. I'm sure it would have been an excellent business decision to hold on to Doyle, Hunt , Bikey or Harper. We brought in a lot of money for players who wanted to leave and in certain cases deserved to be allowed to move on.

I really think that the transition of any squad needs to be a slow and steady trickle effect where players are bought in, tested and then gradually slotted into the best fit team and effective position, formation.

Last season the start was particularly disasterous due to BR being introducted into the mix, players who weren't effectively blooded in and settled and possibly the sense of occasion for a number of our team. The play was disjoined, strategy askew and panic easily reached.

If that equates to a sound business 'best build' then it's best to avoid such a repeat. Expenditure saved on selling off the 'prem' players, having to get in loan players, paying off BR and what could have proved a huge gamble with no pay off in getting BM to fill the void, and possibly installing another manager to replace BM if that failed, was a genuis gamble that eventually (and fortunately) paid off.

Thankfully next season could appear on the face of it, a more settled campaign.
