Keep hold of your best players for a quick return to the Prem.

We gambled in this exact way and lost. That's where the parachute payment went

Sorry to harp on, but no way did ALL of our parachute paymentS pay for the wages to keep hold of our best players.

I'm talking about ALL of our parachute payments here.

I'd estimate we used about 125 - 150 % of a year's parachute payment in year 1, certainly more than that first year's value in any case.

This.

Pretty sure there was a thread on here about the bank calling in the club's overdraft - despite us being a 'financially well run club'.

No they called it in because we were a well fun a club. We actually had the money.

Sheff UTD were ticking along just fine post relegation until the same thing happened to them, they don't seem to have coped with it quite as well. (although that remains to be seen we could fall apart next year for all we know)

This is called an argument of personal incredulity and doesn't stand up. Just because you can't understand how it could be the case, doesn't make it not true. You need to find a little more really.

If you think that ALL the parachute payments we received over 3 or 4 years or whatever it's been ALL went on keeping our best players - you're seriously deluded!!

You would do a lot better if you knew remotely what you were talking about RL. Parachute payments lasted for two years. I believe the parachute payments amounted to a total of about £20m, Dirk, help me out here...

I think our Wage budget year one following relegation was shown to be about £18m recently. Obviously there is other revenue, but then there was also that overdraft people keep mentioning.

You'd help yourself if you stopped and thought for a minute and maybe checked some of the figures... don't want to be patronising RL, but you're kinda asking for it.

We had parachute payments going UP to Prem and parachute payments going DOWN. I've been talking about ALL the parachute payments. But I give up.

What the hell are you talking about you crazy loon? You only get parachute payments for being RELEGATED. We got Premier League TV money whilst in the Premier League, but our Wage budget was over £30m both seasons... You get small fry prize money for going up.

Please explain how you can be awarded parachute payments for being about to be promoted!

Yeah, I meant the extra money we got for going up and the money we got in TV revenue - soz that I lumped it all in as "parachute" payments.

So the stuff that got spent on our massive (comparative to this division) wage bill in the Prem then.

This is what I don't understand - when we went up, we must have known the approximate amounts we would be getting in extra money - so why did we increase our wage bill so exhorbitantly?

In an attempt to compete? And half our fans still think we didn't spend nearly enough.

It was a most uncharacteristic "gamble" on getting back up in that first season. Keep the likes of Doyle, Hunt, Shorey and go for it.

SC can be very persuasive when he's got a couple of hundred people in his car park space chanting his name - I think everyone more or less got carried away with the emotion that week and thought "we'll go for it for a year".

We made a profit and had one of the lower wage bills in the division. In what way was it an exorbitant hike in wages?

When we came down again there was a 40% reduction (contractual I believe) in the wage bill. I think what happened is we renegotiated with our star players to keep their wages at top whack to gamble on going up again. It was a one year gamble and that, plus some debt repayment, was covered by the parachute payments.

........But we didn't keep Shorey.
