I was being a dick.
Call it withdrawal from the invariable consumption of festive alcohol, the return of the concept of ‘morning’, ‘moving’ and ‘thinking’, or the possibility I’m just a massive turdsatchel – I do get furious about this debate which to me seems alarmingly like excusing casual racism with incognisant logic.
It’s rather boneheaded of me to think I can win round opposition with over elaborate, asterisk-punctuated spite, but this issue is not just important, but also close to me.
Racist dialogue, much like any bigoted language, stretches far from normal words, even other words which are caused to offend such as reference to a persons weight or general appearance. These characteristics, however hurtful to remark upon, rarely have blighted a person and their entire family history with such violence, inequality and oppression. These traits are universal to humankind, rarely have prevented people from acquiring work, a home, or a stable life. There are no alarmingly populated right-wing groups of angry males terrorising them, no history of enslaving them, no call to kick them out of the country, no campaign to harm or petrify them – these universal traits are rarely more than something people poke fun at, rather than use them as an excuse to obliterate them.
My Granddad is under the innocent but ignorant impression that the term ‘paki’ is just an abbreviation. If he knew the terror that word fills my friend with when she hears it, the memories of violent thugs yelling it at her in chase, screaming it through her letterbox, spitting it in her families face whenever they left the house, perhaps he would appreciate the weight of the word – intended as an abbreviation or not – and be thoughtful enough to stop using it.
Maybe those who are comfortable in referencing someone’s skin, especially in an act of aggression, should wonder why others aren’t, and perhaps consider that the lack of respect they are showing towards race, is in itself a level of racism, and that they are justifying the continued social acceptability of such terms.
The far right have been finding loopholes in equality for generations; I can see where the next ones are coming from and it makes me angry, even more so when level-headed and educated people seem happy to adopt their arguments and excuses.
I don’t believe it is possible to use racist language in aggression, without being a racist. I also think it’s possible to be a racist and have black friends. But I’ve banged on far to long as it is.
Not sure what I expect to get from this post; at best perhaps it will stir a bit of thoughtful debate or change someone’s opinion on the matter; at worst it might make me look less of a prick.
