They still don't like us

They have scored two goals at home this season and are bottom of the football league, get around 1800 home fans and somehow have the audacity to take the pizz out of our loss against Arsenal

Love to have the opportunity to stuff em like the old days.

I've increasingly found myself in the strange position of wanting Aldershot (and to a lesser extent Swindon and Oxford) to do well and get promoted, to increase the chances of playing us again.

There's no point having rivals if you never play each other.

Reading have no "rivals". Sw*nd*n and *xf*rd don't care about us and Aldershot Town have no history with us (also there's the argument that with them, like Wycombe, you may as well have a rivalry with Bracknell Town or Reading Town or Wokingham & Emmbrook).

So pending some regular match "incidents" over a short period of time against some side or other our realistic proper derby games these days are Watford & Southampton (plus Portsmouth if they ever get back to some semblance of decency).

For the record I believe that Bournemouth still don't like us...

Aldershot Town as a name have no history with us however Aldershot as a club and their fans definitely do.

If we played them, home or away, town would be carnage. They are our traditional rivals no doubt about that.

We haven't played any of these teams in years.

For me these days the rivals are West Ham, QPR and maybe Fulham

You can't invent a rivalry. They are born through history and that never goes away, doesn't matter how long since we played them.

True but I don't think there is any love lost with the trio above, and we play them a whole lot more often so it could be they overshadow the lower league opposition we used to play.

Disagree. I'd suggest that it's possible for a rivalry to fade away. If there's nothing fueling that rivalry in some way or another, people will stop caring.

The rivalry with Aldershot, and Oxford and Swindon, is based on geography. Barring another ice age, that will not fade. It might not be as important to us as it was 25 years ago but its still there especially for them. It must be awful to be a Shots fan and look at Reading, who they were historically on a par with, and see we are now light years apart. That must fuel a most intense sense of jealousy and rivalry.

As you say, there is something fueling the rivalry there, geography and jealousy.

In my opinion, your opinion is wrong.

Fulham is a really random choice for a rival. Based on what exactly?

I would have said Cardiff or Wolves over Fulham.

For me the teams we could very loosely call 'rivals' are QPR, West Ham & Cardiff. Plus I hate Wolves.

A rivalry is when two teams dislike eachother. The above and also Swindon and Oxford couldn't give a shit about us.

West Ham have definitely become rivals in the past 10 years with a lot of people from both sets of fans genuinely disliking each others club.

Hence why I said 'loosely' i.e. we don't have any!!

Yeah probably shouldn't have mentioned it, I'm basing it partly on a vitriolic anti-Reading FC rant I read in a Fulham fanzine once, and the odd fight I saw years ago. I wasn't at the recent Fulham game but I heard of here there was some minor scuffle. Point taken though, not really as much a canditate for a modern 'rival' like QPR or West Ham are.
