Esteban Not sure I understand all the love for Southampton. They are rank, just as bad as we are, which is why they are in a relegation scrap. Like us, Villa and QPR, they are not good enough for the PL, just hoping that there are three teams worse than them. They’ll play the same brand of Championship football they did last season, looking for inspiration from Lallana or knocking diagonal balls over the top to Lambert.

The key area will be on their left flank – if HRK gives Cummings as little support as he did against United, we’ll have trouble. We need Morrison to concentrate against Lambert for the whole 90 minutes, although you have to cut him some slack, due to his age. And we need one of our strikers to drop into the hole and give another outlet to Leigertwood or Tabb. Too often, our central midfield has had to attempt to play straight balls out wide, which get cut out. We’ve got to stop playing in straight lines.

Although we defended poorly against Man U, they did play some really good stuff, which Southampton aren’t capable of. Against their defence, we’ll get chances. It really does depend which Reading team turns up. Southampton are there for the taking, as are we, but there’s no reason why we can’t or won’t score goals against them. Question is, can we score one more than they do?

You say they are as bad as we are-I hope you are right.
FWIW they thrashed Villa and Beat QPR whereas we lost to Villa and drew with QPR which implies that they are better than us.
I'll take anything but a defeat tomorrow however head says a reverse of last season so 3-1 to them and Brian teetering on the brink.
BTW Saints play Sunderland after we do so a very significant part of the season is coming up.

I apologise if this has already appeared but, anyway, stats from the BBC show:

Reading have lost 17 points from winning positions in the Premier League this season.
Reading have the lowest average possession (41.2%) and passing accuracy (69.1%) in the top flight.
Nicky Shorey puts in more accurate crosses per game (3.6) than any other player in the Premier League.

For me the most significant of these stats (although they all tell a story) is the second one - it is why we are shipping goals, failing to offer the opposition anything surprising or creative and why the fans are becoming so frustrated. Unless we can sort out precisely why the second stat applies to us I can't see us staying up. If we can improve our possession and passing in the midfield we are, I think, probably in with a good chance of staying up.

TheSiege If RFC do'nt win this, we might all as well give up! Unfortunately, people on this site will still be supporting BMcD because they lack any reality about how football works!

I would argue that those who want McDermott out lack any knowledge about how McDermott works, let alone football.

1-0 To Reading. It'll be a stalemate and we'll nick an injury time winner.

RFCSPACE best striker in the Championship last year, an England international (lol) and a £12M signing that most Reading fans would spunk over.

We've got Nicky Shorey

In the same way that England beat Spain, which implies we are the world champions!

Could be the worst game of the season.

I think we're going to be embarrassed.....

Both teams can score, but both have big defensive problems.
I reckon 4-2 Reading
Roberts x2
Morrisson
Shorey
Guthrie

Fox Lambert

Southampton 3-0 Reading
Morrison and Shorey get injured, Villa, Sunderland and Wigan all win to leave us 7 points from safety.

Dunno, basically, could be a thumping (Shorey excepted, I think Saints have better players)

but I could also see us getting a good result, the game is so important.

I'd take a draw

Here is a prediction

Just looked at Sunderland's coming fixtures. They have Chelsea today, then us, Man U away, Saints away, Man C at home on Boxing Day
Spurs 3 days later, then Liverpool on Jan 2nd. IMO they HAVE to beat us but I expect them to be in the bottom two by January 3rd.

They played Villa at home, we played Villa away.

Results have actually been pretty much the same.

Drew with Fulham, Norwich at home.

Lost to Spurs, Man Utd at home.

Lost away at Liverpool, West Brom

Two very even sides but I reckon they're heading in the right direction moreso than we, hence my feeling it'll be a home win.
