Whilst we are talking about signing players in the summer something that I have noticed recently that has really separated us from Villa and Wigan in particular is the lack of a striker that can do it for themselves. When you look at the starting 11 I don't think Villa or Wigan are THAT much better teams that us but what they do have which has saved them a few times is a striker that has single-handedly won them games. In Benteke and Kone they have players that when the whole team is playing shite can do something special and gain them points. We don't have that, Pog and ALF are both very reliant on service and support.

If we are going to be looking for a striker in summer (which we should) it would be nice to get a game changer. Ok Benteke and Kone are from abroad but look at Lambert who has played in three leagues in the last three years and can win a game himself so there must be players around like this.

I have seen a few rumours about Sharp and while I would welcome him I don't think he is much different from what we have, a good finisher especially in the chump.

Esteban
marcusopp Just because we didn't accumulate enough points, doesn't mean our squad is a complete flop at this level.
On paper QPR have a much better squad, but have the same points as us.
It's not necessarily up to the club who stays and who goes either. We didn't want to sell Stephen Hunt remember, but an offer came in and he wanted to leave.
I reckon we'll lose;
Pogbrebyak
Le Fondre
Pearce
Federici
Mariappa
Kebe
Guthrie
All to 'higher' clubs
While others like Church, Tabb could be released.

Noel Hunt is a good servant to the club, and puts in a shift when he plays. There aren't many strikers who don't throw their toys out of the pram when they're on the bench each week.

+1 and a huge OUCH at the players you rightly point out are quite likely on some clubs' wanted lists.

It is very unlikely we will lose that many players - we only lost Kitson and Shorey last time - Hunt and Doyle went the following summer - and we were under more pressure from teh chairman to sell.

Pog and Pearce are likely to go and maybe ALF but he basically has had one good scoring run.

Who would want to sign Guthrie? Kebe is injury prone, Feds inconsistent taking season as a whole...

Not sure this statement really stands up to scrutiny JC. Perhaps you could elaborate and tell us which games they have single-handedly won for their teams this season when the rest of their team has been playing shite..

He did however apparently kick off at the rumoured wages we were paying Pogrebnyak. He's been a decent workhorse but I'm all for getting rid of him and he's too injury prone and lacking in quality. To get him to stay we're probably talking about a 2 or more likely 3 year contract for a 30 year old player who shouldn't really get a look in for a decent side.

I don't care for guessing who will stay and who will go, but I'm intrigued about the fringe youngsters getting a chance under Adkins. Obita, Samuel, D'ath all have a great chance to prove themselves this summer and earn a place in the first team.

Ok I appreciate that and its hard to name specifics as someone who hasn't followed their seasons as closely as our own but the impressions I have got from even stuff like MOTD and talking to a villa fan is that Benteke and Kone have scored goals themselves. Benteke in particular I have seen just decide he wants to score and walk through a team. Whether the rest of the team plays well he still has that ability to do so, for all there own individual positives I can't see ALF or the Pog doing that. Obviously both have had dry spells and look world beaters one week and then useless the next but they just seem a lot less reliant on everyone around them. Whether thats actually the case or just the way its painted on MOTD I don't know

if you are saying that these players are not good enough for the premiership, what miracle would make them attractive to other premiership sides?

You're right, but those who do want to leave are likely to come from that list. It also depends on who wants to sign them.
Kebe's been here a long time too, but fat sam's been sniffing around before.
Le Fondre has been linked with WBA for £2M.
Guthrie may leave by mutual consent.
Let's hope no one else has seen the impressive performances from Mariappa this season, or someone may make an offer. Luckily for us he's chosen to represent Jamaica internationally, meaning playing in the championship won't have the same detrimental effect as if were representing england.
Feds and McCarthy have been attracting interest a long time too.
Like you said though, we'll probably only lose a few, which will leave us with an almost premiership quality squad in the championship, which should make us strong contenders next year.

If Adkins intends to play a passing style, he'll need to get new players in. Coppell didn't play passing football, then we got a passing manager in who couldn't get the players he needed to make it a success, we fired him and appointed another non-passing manager. The key is not necessarily who goes, but who comes in. How many of these players can play passing style football? Not many i'd bet.

So probably, to be a success, we'll need 6 new midfielders, a new striker, and perhaps two or three defenders in order for Adkins to be doing well. Personally I hope he achieves this, we could do a Swansea, just choose a style of football and get the players for that, get a manager for that and put the patience in to make it work.

Keep: McCarthy,Taylor,Kelly,Morrison,Marriapa (Capt),Karracan(right back cover),Guthrie,Carrico ,Alf,Jimmy,HRK,McAnuff,Blackman,McCleery,Pog (?),Akpang ,the promising kids.

I am trying to be generous here.

The rest can be given away-nobody's going to pay any money for them.

We are strong (for the Chumpionship) in goal, centre back and winger.

We desperately need a quick left back (oh for Bertrand),centre mid and another striker.

Just no. Guthrie can do one, not set the world on fire and caused problems too. Ledge, Gunter, Gorkss and Cummings are proven in the Champ and should stay in the team. Pog is allegedly on waaay too much money, and why the hell would you ditch Feds playing as he has been, and especially considering last season?

I wouldn't blink if we lost Federici, Leigertwood, Karacan, Shorey, Taylor, McAnuff, Pogrebnyak, Hunt, Church.

We wont have a massive budget next season, so get rid of the deadwood like Leigertwood; over-rated heavy footers like Karacan, lumps like Pogrebnyak and Hunt, and replace them with a few decent buys and give the likes of D'Ath, Samuel and Obita a chance - players that can be coached to play how Nigel Adkins wants them to play, and more importantly, young hungry players who want to learn and prove themselves.

If they are good enough they'll get their chance if they aren't then they won't. That is the way it is and the way it should always be.
