Winston Smith Says his wife and kids have already moved back to Marseille as they found it hard living here

And will take a significant pay cut. So this isn't about money which is a good thing.

Not sure anyone really knows that tbh, not that it really matters anyway

National rags reckon he is on around £120k a week now, local journo says it is £67k a week basic with many various bonuses, some of which will very likely not be met to reach his top whack (EL& CL qualification being 2 of them)

Football is mainly about money these days. I'm not surprised this has passed you by though.

I think money plays a significant part, as it should do because it is someone's career, but I disagree that this is what it is mainly about. I think it is mainly about individuals passion for the game is what it is mainly about, without that passion it would be hard to maintain at career at such a high level.

I wonder which set of fans who were opposed to spending big were OK about it when a so called rich Russian took over their club, promised to spend big but then did one?

You'll have to give us a clue on that, doesn't fit any club's I can think of.
Pompey perhaps but not sure their guy was a Russian...

Not sure Kes. Certainly not Reading fans as I remember there were a fair few that were cautious about such a move, and those that weren't were already pressuring Madejski to spend for years.

Investing to be competitive is certainly different than an already handsomely paid player wanting to ditch a club at the top level of his profession, purely for money.

genome Did he refuse to play though?

Wanting a move to a bigger club is all well and good but going on strike until you get the move is a different story.

Having said that, doesn't he want to join Marseille? Bit of a :| is due there

Marseille are probably bigger than West Ham, certainly more European football in recent memory. PSG Marseille was the big game of the season.

Forgive me for thinking most fans would like top players at their club to try and bring success. All except Reading fans then.

1. Not at the expense of being a shambles for quite a while after. See us, and for more extreme example, see Portsmouth.

2. We got promoted with Brian McDermott as manager, and a front line of le Fondre, Church. Hunt Senior and Roberts. If you want to push the boat out, Manset got a couple as well. Top players? pffft.

3. BANG BANG CLAP CLAP

But at the time he took over you didn't know that. He promised riches, you got excited then he did a runner.

I should just copy and paste my previous responses really.

I'm not sure why you're lumping all Reading fans into one basket. Unless it suits your argument :?: As I've said, plenty were cautious about spending and to be fair, rightly so.

You don't necessarily need to spend money to get top players. See Reading's recent history. Leicester, Burnley, etc...
