Was in reality of course just one of those nights for TAA - but a cynic would wonder whether he his head is in Madrid and wants Liverpool to sell in January.

Is he an actual defender?

I mean, the numbers tell a different story to the media rhetoric that he isn't. And Liverpool has had one of the best defences in the league for years - you don't do that with a hole on your right hand side. If it was just a case of 'run at TAA', Liverpool would be nowhere. No doubt that he could improve though, of course.

Worst Liverpool performance of the year, luckily it was against united so only 2 points were dropped and none of the chasers gained any ground

In fairness, it was their first game of the year.

Every time I watch The Chase and Shaun Wallace is doing the chasing, he loses catastrophically.

Forgot the league cup semis were over 2 legs. Thought Newcastle were already in the final and Spurs were joining them, until the commentator mentioned it in the 97th min

switched it on last night as the game was going into injury time to check on the score and saw a Spurs player eating an energy gel. couldn't help but wonder if that was really going to do anything for him as the game was about to end, and instead just have him at home later on absolutely buzzing, unable to sleep

A Newcastle/Spurs final would be quite something. Spurs' 17-year trophy famine looks measly compared to Newcastle's 70.

Whilst Liverpool were pretty poor, the decision not to send off Bergvall two minutes earlier was appalling. Standards of refereeing remain so low.

56 years not 70. Newcastle last won what you’d call a noteworthy competition in 1969 when they beat Ujpest Dosza 6-2 on aggregate in the Fairs Cup (now the Europa League). Since then they’ve won lesser trophies; Division 2 ( 3 times ) Texaco Cup ( twice ) and been runners up in both FA and League Cups several times so not exactly totally barren.

Does the League Cup even count as a “noteworthy” trophy any more though?

Agreed, peak little Stewie Atwell. i didn't even realise until the third replay or so that he'd made Tsimikas go off the pitch after receiving treatment

It's utterly clueless the level of refereeing in this country. You wonder why the standards at Reading's level are little better than a Sunday morning sometimes. Then you see dreadful standard of the PL and all becomes clear. Really doesn't help that VAR seems to add to the all round incompetence with even those sat reviewing countless slo mo replays from all angles still getting things blatantly wrong. And it's the second season running Liverpool have been "done over" by refereeing incompetence at Spurs - thankfully for them this time it's only a first leg in a second rate competition.

It's also a ******* stupid rule that players in receipt of treatment have to go off the field and can't come back on immediately. I get it's meant to cut out play acting but to be honest it has had zero effect and referees are quite capable of interpreting play acting as ungentlemanly conduct and booking offenders which is what the authorities should be pushing rather than penalising sides further for the temerity of having a player fouled.

Thing wot I did not know. Liverpool Sporting Director Richard Hughes - the part architect of their current contracts shambles - is a former Bournemouth and Portsmouth player, with over 100 Premier League games for the latter and winning the FA Cup, retiring in 2014.
