Can't bear the joint hosting nonsense. It isn't a non-competitive sports day where everyone has to win. Just give it to whoever is deemed the best host.

Especially for two countries that have a decent amount of football heritage.

Understand it more when it came to the World Cup in Japan and S. Korea.

I don't mind it at all when its countries that that wouldn't typically be able to host it on their own. I like the idea of football taking place somewhere where they usually wouldn't get that kind of thing. Italy doesn't need to joint host it though. and I don't think Turkey really does either.

These days dual+hosting is usually down to the necessity of keeping the costs of hosting at a reasonable level, especially given the mess of restrictions and demands that FIFA inflict on hosts for a WC finals.

If a country cannot host on their own then they shouldn't be bidding to host it. If that means the same 5 or 6 countries host the tournament on a loop then that's how it is.

Couldn't disagree more. I don't agree with the FIFA "solution" to have a few games in South America and then the rest in Spain/Morrocco but as tournaments expand there is no harm in having 2 nations (3 at an absolute push) co-hosting a tournament if it geographically makes sense.

Wouldn't say that Italy/Turkey falls into that category. For me co-hosts should fulfill at least one of the following 2 criteria - share a border and/or the "smaller" partner wouldn't be able to physically host the expanded tournaments we currenty see.

So if Italy want to co-host, should be with Slovenia/Switzerland (or to bend the border rule slightly, Croatia) - would have no issues of an Austria/Hungary bid for a Euros or Aus/NZ for a world cup.

What I don't like is where the co-hosting seems forced like the Spain/Morocco/South America WC.

in the summer Aleksander Ceferin was highly critical of Italian football stadiums being old and outdated, and the promised work to modernise them by 2032 was being delayed or cancelled:

"I think Italian football infrastructure is a shame. You are one of the biggest footballing countries, you have won many World Cups, European Championships, Champions Leagues, but at the same time, among the big countries, you have by far the worst infrastructure.

I’m a bit tired of these discussions about Italian infrastructure to be honest, because all we ever hear is words. I hope that Italy will do something. Clubs need help from the government, from local municipalities, and even from private investors. It’s time to act, because the situation is very bad.

“I’m not worried yet. I think that now, the government has also understood that it has to do something. I have a lot of confidence in Gabriele Gravina, who is my first vice-President. He will do everything he can to close the gap. I’m sure that Italy will host the 2032 European Championship.”

Turkey probably does.

They were bidding for sole hosts (vs Italy and Russia) but had a change of mind. Then the Lepanto bid was put together.

Euros expansion in 1996 ruled out a lot of countries. The 2020 ‘lots of countries’ approach was a response to the increasing cost and scale of the thing. Sweden, 1992 hosts, are now too small given the current requirements for stadia, their sizes and their infrastructure.

It is a shame, not sure how you row it all back a bit.

Yeah, Italy/Former Yugoslavia would be much more preferable.

You’d think Turkey probably could host a 16 country tournament but then Austria/Switzerland and Poland/Ukraine probably tells you they couldn’t.

Final thought: I think people forget just how much Turkey improved its national football team in the late 80s to 90s. Mid-80s, the league was one of the worst in Europe, England donged them 8-0 twice and 5-0. While they have some fairly big stadia, the drop off is pretty rapid (6 stadia > 40k, but 6 20k and below in the top flight). Gut feeling is stadia are big but basic.

Looking at the ten stadia they're planning on using, and they're all modern stadia - at least 21st century. Seems Turkey had a football stadium construction spree in the the 2010s:
  1. 77,563 - Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul - opened 2002; to be renovated ahead of the finals
  2. 53,978 - Ali Sami Yen Stadium, Istanbul (Galatasaray) - opened 2011
  3. 51,160 - New Ankara 19 Mayıs Stadium, Ankara - to be built ahead of the finals
  4. 47,430 - Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, Istanbul (Fenerbahçe) - opened 1908; completely rebuilt between 1999 and 2006
  5. 43,361 - Centennial Atatürk Stadium, Bursa (Bursaspor) - opened 2015
  6. 41,600 - Konya Metropolitan Municipality Stadium, Konya (Konyaspor) - opened 2014
  7. 40,980 - Şenol Güneş Sports Complex, Trabzon (Trabzonspor) - opened 2016
  8. 35,574 - Gaziantep Stadium, Gaziantep (Gaziantep) - opened 2017
  9. 32,537 - Antalya Stadium, Antalya (Antalyaspor) - opened 2015
  10. 32,500 - New Eskişehir Stadium, Eskişehir (Eskişehirspor) - opened 2016
I'd imagine they'll all be no worse than the typical stadium you'd get in England tbh.

Italy's ten however sees six of their ten requiring renovation; three will be new builds and only one (Juventus) can be left untouched. That's where their big issues lie, as Italy doesn't have a huge amount of capital to spend on stadium infrastructure and have to fund basically all their stadia.

Can see Italy being removed as hosts at some point, with perhaps Turkey going alone or countries like Azerbaijan; Greece; Serbia; Bulgaria; and/or Romania picking up some of Italy's matches. Greece would be the most obvious, but they'd need some forewarning if they wanted to host games outside the Athens area.

think that would be an Italy - Austria joint bid, albeit Turkey could block it by deploying its army to Syria
