Clyde1998 At 30, Jack Marriott really wouldn’t be a great piece of business for £500k and whatever wages he’d be on.

What’s happened to us signing younger League One standard players with potential to develop?

At the very least a Sam Smith-style signing where he still have three or so years at their peak left in them and some potential resale value.

The key to building a squad is not signing just players who are young and may attract a decent sell on value - you need to add to that with the odd player who will do a job now and will have little to no sell on value - I'm not saying Marriott is the right signing (if it happens) but spending money on an experienced player in a position of need makes sense.

We may "lose" 500k on him but if he helps a player elsewhere shine i.e. then that may raise their market value by double or triple what we paid for them, it makes sense.

Most Wrexham outlets seem to think we are the favourite for Marriott. Think this may end up being the senior striker.

I mean it may work a bit but my expectations of what he could bring would be pretty low. Never really rated him and just seems to have bounced around teams in the lower divs without huge success in recent years

At this point, I don’t really care how good they are, as long as they're affordable and mean we can field a substitute striker or replace MOM if he gets injured/needs a break or plays shit for a prolonged run.

Can you harry defenders? Yep, tick, you're good enough.

I feel the same about the player and he is yet another shorty.

Wareham never filled me with confidence nor did Simon Cox or Vydra etc., all too small to play as the solo target man and presumably we should be looking at bigger and stronger rather than smaller and quick.
Marriot is not very big.

Yeah tbh I’d rather us go for someone 6 inches taller and more physical. Why Aneke despite a not especially impressive recent record made some sense

Stick Burns up top, such as we have at kitchen sink time. To be fair to him, he was a handful.

There are only 3 good instances that I can remember of defenders moving successfully to a centre-forward position:-
Malcolm MacDonald
Warhurst
Chris Sutton.

The position is so different, not least because of the extra running involved and the change usually only happens out of desperation for just a few minutes in a game.
In recent times Man Utd have pushed Maguire forward but only because it is a club that doesn't have the money to buy a striker to sit on the bench.

We await the arrival of the much needed target man.

I'll post assuming that your suggestion wasn't just tongue-in-cheek.

Apologies for the repetition-I'm back here after a long lay-off and may not have reached full posting fitness yet.

Sounds like Marriot is happening. Not what we need imo, but feels like we've reached the "any striker will do" stage now though. Very much Sam Baldock vibes for me.
